877. GRETA GARBO (1905-1990). Legendary Swedish leading lady of the '20s and '30s whose early retirement in 1941 only enhanced the aura of mystery that surrounded her. She was nominated for the Academy Award for her performances in Anna Christie (1930), Romance (1930), Camille (1936) and Ninotchka (1939). Endorsement on DS, a corporate bank check drawn on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer account at Pacific-Southwest Trust & Savings Bank, Culver City, Mar 22, 1927. Payable to Greta Garbo for $21,200.00. Garbo has boldly signed in green ink on reverse. Light vertical folds; single punch cancellation well away from Garbo's signature; couple minor separations with no paper loss of no affect to signature; else Fine. Garbo starred in Love, a silent adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina released later that year opposite matinee idol John Gilbert. She would later reprise the role in the sound version in 1935. This check was most probably her salary for the starring role. Est: $3000-5000
