HANCOCK SIGNS REVOLUTIONARY WAR MILITARY APPOINTMENT39. JOHN HANCOCK (1737-1793). American patriot and statesman; as president of the Continental Congress, he was the first Signer to pen his name on the Declaration of Independence and the most prominently inscribed. Hancock was the first governor of Massachusetts, serving nine terms before his death in office. Revolutionary War-date partly printed DS as governor, 1p, 11½"x12½", Boston, Jul 1, 1781. Embossed paper and wax Massachusetts seal affixed at left margin. Military appointment of Lemuel May as "Captain of a Company in the First Regt. of Militia in the County of Suffolk whereof Ebr. Battle Esqr. is Colonel..." Boldly signed at conclusion. Attested by JOHN AVERY of Suffolk at bottom margin that May had taken "the Oath of Allegiance & Abjuration & Oath of Office as required by Law before me." Scattered light foxing; quarter-folds away from Hancock's very strong signature; very small paper loss at right top marginal edge; occasional light wrinkling; else VG/Fine.
