395. RETURN JONATHAN MEIGS JR. (1765-1825) Indian fighter; Postmaster-General under Monroe (1814-23). As governor of Ohio (1810-14), he did more than any other governor to aid the country in the War of 1812 by garrisoning the forts, protecting exposed settlements and the aid he gave to General Harrison. LS "R.J. Meigs Jr." as postmaster general, 1p, 7¾"x9½", [Washington, DC], Dec 9, 1818. To E. Huntington enclosing "a petition from the inhabitants of 'Canterbury' Windham County Ct. for a change of Postmasters, which you will please return after a perusal with your opinion thereon..." Boldly signed at conclusion. Light toning; minor general wrinkling; ink only slightly uneven; else near Fine. Interesting two doves with olive branch watermark present. Est: $80-160
