Calvin and Ruby Black were folk artists who lived in California's Mojave Desert and created more than 80 life-size female dolls, each with its own personality, function, and costume. Calvin would make the dolls, write the dialogue, songs and music and Ruby would create the handmade clothing. Calvin got his start when worked for a time at a carnival where he learned to be a ventriloquist in nine different voices. In 1953, the Blacks opened a rock shop in Yermo, CA. They produced the Possum Trot wind-driven merry go-rounds and Fantasy Doll Shows to supplement their income.
