FANTASTIC SLOTIN AUCTION NEW DISCOVERY! Paint, glitter, plastic flowers on masonite. 36" w x 24"h. Signed. Est. $800-1,200. Ship: $55. Mr. John Edward Welch (b. 1918, NC) is a veteran of WWIIand The Korean War. A sign maker by trade, Mr. Welch produced several hundred pieces over the past 40 years and they all remained in his apartment until recently. The focus of his art was to educate African American's of the heroes in their own culture. He also focused his efforts in preaching self-responsibility against social ills in the community of the black culture (i.e. signs about working hard, don't do drugs). He is one of the last of the free-hand sign painters of the black community, the Sam Doyle of Mid-Atlantic states, the social historian of his generation. Art collectors wake up. Read the writing on the wall and the signs ahead of you...This is truly a remarkable find. The real deal. Preachers, entertainment celebrities, sports legends, intellects, teachers, scientists, political activists, you name it he captured black history in a medium that is sadly a disappearing art. Mr. Welch moved this year from his apartment and this is the last will and testament taped to his door.
