Rookwood Standard 6 7/8" pitcher, Schmidt

Standard Glaze pitcher decorated with five cavorting barn swallows by Carl Schmidt in 1900. Marked with the Rookwood logo which provides the date, shape 437 B and the artist's incised monogram. There is a wheel ground X to the base, the reason for which we cannot discern. The rim and handle both disclose the presence of overspray, which is indicative of restoration and the condition which precipitated the X may be part of that process. There is fine overall crazing. An example of Mr. Schmidt's great skill and attention to detail.
