Two monumental Rookwood lidded garden urns sculpted by Ernest Bruce Haswell in 1917. Each urn features a beautiful young woman working with a child to plant either a tree or a sunflower. Stories surrounding the urns indicate that there were originally four, placed at the corners of an outdoor pool owned by the Taft family in Cincinnati. Two were destroyed. Incised on the side of each is the Rookwood logo, the date and the artist's monogram. Inside each rim is the Rookwood logo and the notation 470 G 696. Approximate height of each is 55 inches. The urn with the sunflower has been broken into several large pieces and repaired. The other urn has some surface nicks and abrasions. Both seem to have been painted a color very close to the original bisque finish. These are perhaps the only two signed pieces by Haswell extant. A photo (reproduced here) of Haswell working on one of the urns is pictured in Peck on page 163. NOTE: Each of these urns is extremely heavy. We would prefer local pickup. Shipping and crating will be at the buyers expense and accordingly expensive.
