both ink and color on paper: one of Feng-du, the realm of the dead, showing several courts of hell with Yanlon, the king of hell at center and Lady Meng-po at the left serving the tea of forgetfulness, sight area 52 x 27-1/2 in.; one of the Jade Emperor and his court gazing upwards at Guanyin and her two acolytes, the bodhisattva pouring a stream of water from her bottle to save the multitudes on earth, one of the courts of hell shown below the stream, sight area 53-3/4 x 28-1/4 in., 19th century; modern wood frames. Both laid down on board, trimmed, toned, the former with creases, the latter with scratches, area with tears. Provenance: Estate of the Late Mary F. Kessler, Tryon, North Carolina.
