(German, 1885-1964), titled in German on label accompanying lot "U-53 On It's Journey to America", signed twice "Claus Bergen" and "Claus Bergen Munchen", gouache on paper, 31-3/4 x 53-3/4 in.; carved and black-painted frame. laid on fiberboard, mildew damage, restored tear lower right, retouch in sky and possibly over first signature; frame with abrasions. Provenance: Purchased at The Second International Water Color Exhibition, Art Institute of Chicago in 1922 by a family friend of consigner; Private Collection, Asheville, North Carolina. Exhibition: The Second International Exhibition of Water Color at The Art Institute of Chicago, 1922 (label accompanies lot).
