chest, poplar throughout with pegged, dovetailed and rosehead nail construction, original iron strap hinges, interior candle till, original batwing brasses on two dovetailed drawers, bracket feet, untouched original surface with pale blue rectangular panels and painted inscription panel "17 Johannes Klein 96" on brilliant orange ground (now faded), Pennsylvania, dated 1796, 27-1/4 x 50-1/2 x 21-1/2 in. As-found condition with losses, wear and fading to painted surface especially to top, top warped, pest damage with some associated losses to feet. Provenance: Estate of the Late William and Priscilla Carlebach, Mystic, Connecticut and Bedford, New York.
