George Washington wearing a figure eight epaulette on his proper right shoulder and draped on the other, 1790-1812, inscribed "Washington", attributed to the Ingram Studio, Volterra, Italy, finely hand-carved alabaster, early 19th century, 12 in. Restoration at fissure in wig, minor abrasions, pencil inscription. Provenance: Estate of the Late William and Priscilla Carlebach, Mystic, Connecticut and Bedford, New York. See Christie's, January 15, 2004, lot 499, and Northeast Auctions, March 6, 2004, lot 411 for similar examples. This group of small busts was exported from Italy before the studio closed in 1812. The bust was inspired by a model by Joseph Wright (American/British, 1756-1793), commissioned by Congress in 1783 and paid for in 1785.
