A Report of the Main Guard, Scotch Planes [sic] dated January 29th, 1777, listing the number of prisoners at zero and the strength of the guard at 33 men, signed "Henry Whiting Lieut. Officer of the Main Guard", on laid paper, 3-1/4 x 6 in. (sight). Backed on paper, hinged to mat with cellophane tape, stains, smudges, creases, tears and losses, possibly period "136" in ink verso (on backing). Provenance: Handwritten notes on mat indicate this manuscript was discovered in a book in a used book store in Boston, 1948. Military records list Henry Whiting as an officer in the 4th Virginia Regiment, George Washington also had a cousin by marriage in Virginia named Henry Whiting. Scotch Plains, New Jersey is located about 20 miles southeast of Morristown, New Jersey where Washington wintered in 1777.
