Abraham Lincoln portrait, signed lower right "G.V. Cooper 1865" (George Victor Cooper, New York, 1810-1878), oil on canvas, 30-1/4 x 25-1/8 in.; 20th century gilt wood reverse-profile frame. Restretched on old stretcher, lined, retouch at edges and possibly in background under heavy varnish (none in face), craquelure, very minor flaking at top right; frame with abrasions. Provenance: A.E. Rueff, Brooklyn, New York; McClees Galleries, Haverford, Pennsylvania, purchased 1967. Reserve: $10,000 Literature: Rufus R. Wilson, [Lincoln in Portraiture,] The Press of the Pioneers, Inc., 1935, New York, illustrated No. LI, p. 275. In the discussion for the painting, it states "During the Civil War Cooper was on duty in Washington, and according to his daughter who is still living had three sittings from Lincoln only a few weeks before the latter's death".
