Israel Abramofsky Oil Painting signed listed

Abramofsky Israel (Ismael) (Russian American) Active 20th Century) who was born in Ukraine and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1923.
signed oil painting on canvas, framed. 21 X 25 inches. Music interior. Abramofsky, Israel (Kiev, Russia, 1888 - Toledo, Ohio, 1959)

Israel was responsible for organizing The Toledo Independent Artist Club in Toledo in 1932. He donated his services for the interest of Art and to help the ones that wanted his help. Elected officers were Paul Cahill, John Blum, Frank Sattick, Dean Sloger, and Hazel Jacoby Harbaur.
They would meet on Sunday mornings for outdoor drawings and Friday evenings to sketch from models. Each member paid 25 cents to cover rent and models, which were taken off the streets or the local 'flop house' at Erie and Orange Street.

Their interest in Art was so great they all signed up for the Army Camouflage Corp, which would allow them the use of Colonel Baker's office at the Federal Building. When this club ended in the spring of 1936, there were 57 members.

Biography from AskART:
Born near Kiev, Russia, Israel Abramofsky was a city-landscape painter and one of his favorite subjects was villages in Breton, France.

In 1919, he lived in Washington DC and from 1947 to 1959 was in Toledo, Ohio. Among his exhibition venues were the Society of Independent Artists, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Jewish Museum.

Israel Abramofsky: Although Israel Abramofsky was born in Russia and died in the United States he can be classified as both a French and American artist. Abramofsky studied art in Paris, under both Jean Paul Laurens and Joseph Berges, and opened a successful studio there on the Quai de la Rapee. During the 1920's and 1930's he produced many fine paintings, watercolors, monoprints and etchings from his Paris studio. At the same time he was a regular visitor to the United States. Abramosky lived and worked in Washington.in 1919 and in Toledo, Ohio, in 1929. When the Germans invaded France in 1939 Abramofsky made America his permanent home.
Primarily a landscape artist, Abramofsky was widely recognized throughout France. As early as 1923 he regularly exhibited with the Salon d'Automne, and was later a frequent exhibitor with both the Salon des Artistes Francais and with the prestigious Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Today, examples of his art will be found in such widespread locations as the Toledo Museum of Art, the Luxembourg Galleries, Paris, Jaffe, Jerusalem, the Butler Museum of American Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Chicago Institute of Art.

This spectacular piece is a Judaica gouache painting by the American artist, Israel (Ismael) Abramofsky. Abramofsky (1888-1975) was born near Kiev, Russia. He studied at the Academie Julian in Paris with J.P. Laurens and Lucien Simon. Abramofsky served in a Siberian prison camp before emigrating to Toledo in 1929 where he joined his family.
