PERSONAL: Born September 12, 1898, in Kaunas, Russia (now U.S.S.R.); immigrated to United States, 1906, naturalized citizen, 1918; died following major surgery, March 14, 1969, in New York, N.Y.; son of Hessel (a carpenter and woodcutter) and Gittel (Lieberman) Shahn; married Tillie Goldstein, 1922 (divorced); married Bernarda Bryson (an artist), 1935; children: (first marriage) Judith, Ezra; (second marriage) Susanna, Jonathan, Abigail. Education:Attended New York University, City College (now City College of the City University of New York), 1919-22, National Academy of Design, 1922, and Art Students League; art study in Europe and North Africa, 1925 and 1927-29.

City councilman for Roosevelt, N.J., 1945-48. One-man and group exhibitions of artwork include Downtown Gallery, 1930, Museum of Modern Art, 1947, Arts Club of Chicago, 1951, Detroit institute of Art, 1954, American institute of Graphic Art, 1957, Stedelijk (Amsterdam), 1961, and Nazionale (Rome), 1962; retrospectives include Museum of Modern Art, 1947, institute of Contemporary Art, 1948, and National Museum of Western Art (Tokyo), 1970. Commissions include murals for Roosevelt, N.J., community building, 1938-39; Bronx Central Annex Post Office, 1938-39; Jamaica, N.Y., post office, 1939; Social Security Building (now Federal Security Building), Washington, D.C., 1940-42; William E. Grady Vocational High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., 1957; and Syracuse University, 1965-66. Works represented in permanent and private collections, including those at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Chicago Art institute, Baltimore Museum of Art, Harvard University, Jewish Museum, and Wellesley College.
