(Russian-American, b. 1898) Maurice Kish was born in Dvinsk, Russia in 1898 and immigrated to New York in his teens. Once in New York he studied as a painter at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design. Kish was a member of several art associations including Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. After World War II Kish became involved in the Educational Alliance, the Brooklyn Art Alliance and was president of the American Veterans Society of Artists in 1962. He exhibited at several galleries over a period of three decades including such distinguished galleries as the National Academy of Design, the Corcoran Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Society of Independent Artists, the Carnegie Institute, the Brooklyn Museum, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and the World's Fair in New York in 1939. Kish received several prizes over his lifetime including 'Outstanding Painting' in 1945, the Gold Medal of the American Veterans Society of Artists in 1963, and the Minnie R. Stern Medal of the Audubon Artists in 1964. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, Russia, the Brooklyn Museum, the Ein Horod Museum in Israel, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Springville Museum in Utah. Several of Kish's writings, sketchbooks and memorabilia are located at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
