Untitled, Photograph, pencil signed, numbered in an edition of 85, printed to the edge, unframed.
Original vintage color photo signed and numbered Paper: 30 x 22 1/2 inches Ms. Bender's work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Menil Collection in Houston. Gretchen Bender is an artist who works in multiple mediums, including Sculpture, serigraph, photo and computer work, video and film. Bender has been creating "media-theatre" performances since 1984, which track the expanding visual vocabularies which have been developing in our culture over the last twenty years through special effects and computer graphics. Bender is currently developing her next "theatre of perception" which is slated to premiere in the Exploded Cinema section of the Rotterdam Film Festival in 1999. In addition to her video and film work, she is the co-editor, with Timothy Druckery of Culture on the Brink (Bay Press 1994). This image is from the ARTISTS PORTFOLIO, a limited edition series of five original prints in support of Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane & Company (the dance company). The other four artists whose works were included in the portfolio were Keith Haring, Robert Longo, Gretchen Bender and William Katz. Roberta Smith, NYTimes, 11/21/86 " Gretchen Bender's roughly burnished steel reliefs are sinister - if Darth Vader made art, it might look like this - yet they require intimate contact. The narrow slots that run across or down their centers contain tiny illuminated messages or equally small filmstrip-size rows of images. ''Revolution'' gleams out of one slot, once you have your nose to it: a high-tech incitement to riot that also invokes the Beatles' hit tune. ''No Death'' promises another piece, and then, a couple of feet along the slot, comes an equally tiny, passive response, ''O.K.'' Another piece consists of a blown-up news photo of stone-throwing South Korean students that Bender has draped with rows of long strips of images taken from television and rendered abstract.
