Authenticated Theodore Gordon Tied Fly

Sign In to see what this sold for

Theodore Gordon (1854-1915). Gordon was dubbed "the Father of dry-fly angling in America" by Alfred Miller in his highly respected book Quest for Theodore Gordon. This statement was never to be refuted. An acclaimed article writer, Gordon fished the Catskill region of New York from the late 1800's to the early 1900's, and is recognized as the first to alter English flies to more closely match hatches in American streams. He has been called "a consumptive hermit with a cosmopolitan personality", but his contributions to fly fishing were of great importance and are still viable today. Coming professionally matted in a 19 1/4" x 9 7/8" wood frame. Shadowbox style mounting includes one pristine extremely rare Theodore Gordon tied dry fly and a photo of Gordon courtesy of the American Museum of Fly Fishing. Matte and frame by Donmar Studio/Don Leyden. Authentication card provided by Ted Niemeyer, written in his hand "This fly was obtained by me from Tom Capstick who located the tackle box, rod and reel, of Gordon. I cleaned the entire collection of flies for which I was given this fly for my involvement." An exceptional provenanced presentation of what most serious collectors would consider the "holy grail" of antique American flies.
