Hewitt (1866-1957) remains a legend in the fly fishing community. Born into a privileged lifestyle, Hewitt fished throughout the United States, Europe and Canada before purchasing a large amount of property in the Catskill Mountains. Establishing a camp known as the "Big Bend Club", the conservator began to study the habits of trout and their natural environments, eventually opening his own hatchery. The angler's knowledge led to five books published from 1926 to 1948 all focusing on trout and the art of fly fishing. Flies tied by this master tier are not common and are coveted by serious collectors. This excellent condition dry fly is housed in shadowbox matting within a 12 5/8" x 8 1/2" wood frame by Donmar Studio/Don Leyden and includes a photo of Hewitt at his tying desk.
