An assortment of 20 flies tied by Omar Needham, as found in his personal fly chest. Different patterns and styles, condition from good to excellent, with several having been fished by Needham.
Born in Maine shortly after the turn of the century, Omar Needham exemplified the integrity and ingenuity common to many New England craftsmen of his era. He was only 14 years old when he built his first rod (about 1920) and spent the next decade perfecting his own tapers. Marrying in 1934, he bought a small business in Norway, Maine, and built a workshop in the rear of the buildŽing. During a visit to the Manchester Orvis rod shop, Needham accepted a job offer and went to work for the respected retail outfitter. When Orvis was sold in 1939 and Wes Jordan was hired to manage the rod making operation, Needham became the primary rod varnish specialist. During this time, he met and befriended Pinky Gillum, whose friendship he continued for the remainder of his life. In 1946, Needham left Orvis to pursue rod building on his own. He continued making rods for the next 25 years, producing nearly 400 during his life, using mostly equipment and tools he made himself. His rods are consistent in quality and are not only collectible, but are still fished by many discerning anglers today who appreciate the work of this humble, self-made man. This and nine other lots are Omar Needham tied flies which were consigned by the Needham family, coming directly from Omar's shop. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
