Posted on telegraph poles or posts for public notices about fishing laws in France from the late 1800's through the turn of the century. This medallion, with oar and anchor, states: "Surveillance Sur Les Ports et Rivieres", which translates to Monitoring Ports and Rivers. Measuring 3 1/2" in length, in excellent condition with light wear and tarnish. Nice patina.
