Howard Terpning is best known for his extraordinary and valuable Western Indian paintings, made after his move to Arizona in the 1970's, caused in part by a commission from Winchester Repeating Arms which rekindled a childhood interest in the West. Terpning's art has graced the covers of Time, Newsweek, Field & Stream, Reader's Digest, and many other well known publications, as well as appearing in major national advertising campaigns for motion picture studios. Prior to his move west, Terpning produced paintings in multiple mediums and genres, including fishing and hunting. This large serene fishing/camp scene, executed in gouache and measuring 20" x 18", comes professionally matted in a 27" x 28" frame, signed on the lower right by the artist. Painting has flaking in a small section on the top right near/in the leaves, all else is in excellent condition. The number of Terpning's western art, illustration art, and commissioned pieces far outweigh examples such as this non-commissioned painting, which are quite rare. An earlier work by an important highly sought artist.
