An incredible discovery - Zane Grey's trunk, numbered 44 on side and top, undisturbed since 1939, the year of Grey's death, also the year of his last trip to Australia. On this well traveled trunk is the tattered and stained, but mostly legible, original Matson Oceanic Steamship label, which reads "Steamer Mariposa Name ZA (torn paper) Stateroom 2(?)54 Date 1/4/39 Port of Departure Los Angele Port of Destination Sydney". Stripes of paint, seen on all of Grey's luggage which accompanied him on his fishing trips, of yellow and white, to identify the contents so time would not be wasted finding items Grey needed. The trunk is well worn with rust, pitting to the hardware, and scattered damage to the finish and handles. In the condition one would expect from a trunk with thousands of rough and often wet travel miles, but one that protected its important contents for the last seven decades. This is one of the largest of Grey's steamer trunks known, measuring 30" x 22" x 13 1/2". This and all items included in this historic find come with a letter of provenance that this case and its contents were personally owned by Zane Grey, which accompanied him on his 1939 trip to Australia.
