Chinese School, 19th Century

View of Hong Kong Island and Harbor. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1865, showing the fully developed city and bustling port with British, American, and Chinese vessels in the foreground, 18 x 31 1/2 in., housed in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Canvas applied to Masonite, craquelure.

Condition: No inpainting noticed under black light, varnish yellowing. An inscription by restorer (probably done sometime in the early 1970s) on the reverse states that an egg tempera mastic varnish was applied.
