A speckled granite head of a man wearing tight fitting Nubian wig, Old Kingdom, c.2625 - 2130 BC, his facial features very naturalistic, with large nose, wide eyes and pursed lips. Remains of plinth at the back of the head. Some age cracks and age deposits. H: 6 5/8" (17.3 cm). Ex collection Hon. Earl Kitchner of Khartoum until 1940; Spink and Son London 1940; St. Louis Art Museum purchased 1940. Kitchener was the 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (June 24, 1850 - June 5, 1916), a British Field Marshal and statesman. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1871 and served in Palestine, Egypt, and Cyprus as a surveyor.
