An amber carving of a fish and a crustacean, Roman, late 1st - 2nd Century AD, both naturalistically rendered lying next to one another. The reverse is carved in the pattern of a leaf; one end drilled for mounting. Minor chipping to one end. L: 3 7/8" (7.3 cm). Ex collection Georges Lotfi, Beirut; Ex. Christie's, New York, 2000; Cf. similar amber carvings in Millionen Jahre Geschichte Fundort Nordrhein-Westfalen, p.291; Cf. Strong, Catalogue of the Carved Amber in the BM, pl. XV for a piece worked in similar fashion.
Amber was popular for jewelry and amuletic purposes during the Roman Empire, with the larger pieces being especially prized and quite expensive. Condition reportSee item description.
