Roman agate ringstone with draped bust of Serapis

Sign In to see what this sold for

An oval ringstone of blood red-orange agate with the draped bust of Serapis in profile, Roman Egypt, early 3rd Century AD. Intact with pleasant style and no wear. 11 x 8mm. Ex collection of Albert F. Pagnon, Luxor, acquired in the 1860's. Serapis was a composite of several Egyptian and Hellenistic deities introduced at the beginning of the Ptolemaic Period. The new deity answered the needs of a new age in which the Greek and Egyptian religions were brought face to face and the new deity was created to form a bridge between the two cultures.
