An early bronze fiddle brooch, Roman Britain, c.AD 45-55, with some silvering remaining under the patination. Found at Hod Hill with thin body and slender catch. Some minor losses and without coil and pin, collection number on underside. L: 2" (5.1 cm). Mounted together by author on custom base with his notes. Cf. Brailsford, Hod Hill, Vol. I (Durden Coll.), B.M., 1962, fig. 10, no. C89 which cites 8 examples known, 6 in the British Museum from Hod Hill and 2 in Taunton Museum from Ham Hill, Som.; Published Robert Hattatt, Brooches of Antiquity, 1987, no. 857 and exhibited in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Nov/Dec, 1982 as part of an exhibition of Hattatt's collection. A very rare brooch type from a well pedigreed collection!
