An exceptional Nicoya bird ocarina from Costa Rica, c. AD 1100 - 1300. This choice example is 4" long, 3 ¼" high and is elaborately decorated. The chest emblem shows stylistic influence from Southern Maya depictions of ceremonial scarves, in this instance perhaps symbolic of a blood sacrifice. In perfect condition, with vivid paint, good dendrites and great sound. Ex Espinoza collection, Toronto.
