An exceptional Nicoya jaguar effigy urn from Costa Rica, c. AD 1000 - 1500. This rare early Pataky polychrome type depicts a shaman transformed into a jaguar. The head is superbly detailed, with a shamanic horn protruding from the forehead and ear ornaments adorning the ears. The arms are supporting the head and the hollow legs contain rattles. The primary decorative band encircling the chamber consists of the man-jaguar designs characteristic of this type, flanked by bands of hook designs. H: 9 ¾". Intact, with strong mineral deposits and dendrites. Ex east coast estate.
