Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) Scotch Broth from Campbell's Soup, 1969; Screenprint in colors; From an edition of 250; Signed; 35'' x 23''; Literature: Feldman-Schellman ll:55; Printer: Salvaore Silkscreen Co., New York; Publisher: Factory Additions, New York; Provenance: Protetch-McIntosh, Washington, D.C.; Private Collection, Rhode Island
Condition reportThe work is in fair condition. Signed in ink on the verso. The work of art has undergone paper conservation and image restoration as described below. Paper is still slightly rippled and stains have been reduced but are visible 6” up from the bottom edge. Minor scuff marks and handling marks.
Paper conservation:
• Immersion in a hydrating water bath to allow the print to expand, thus relaxing the after-effects of the pre-existing water damage (warping/rippling) and the pre-existing creasing (caused by cramped framing conditions).
• Flattening under weights.
Image restoration:
• In-painting to eroded silver areas (along the bottom edge of the soup can), employing a pointillism technique (many tiny overlapping dots) to minimize the visual after-effects (color-loss) of the print's exposure to moisture - Artists' Acrylic paint (silver)
• In-painting to stained areas in background (either side of the base of the soup can), employing a pointillism technique (many tiny overlapping dots) to minimize the visual after-effects (staining) of the print's exposure to moisture - custom mixed gouache paint (warm off white)
