Frame Type: bleached wood Frame Size: 17.75 x 14 inches Josephine Mahaffey : ( American, b. 1903 - d. 1982) Modernist Painter , Printmaker Born in Walker County, Alabama in 1903; This mother of eight raised her family in Ft. Worth, Texas. She studied art at the College of Industrial Arts (now the Texas Woman's University) in Denton, and after graduation continued her studies with painter Sallie Blythe Mummert, and had additional instruction with artists Clinton King, Octavio Medellin, Kathleen Lawrence, and John Ericksonand. Mahaffey later taught art for years around Ft. Worth at the Boy's Club, Woman's Club, Public Health Service Hospital, YWCA, and watercolor classes at her art gallery in Azle, Texas. In 1968, she was honored at the State Fair of Texas with a Josephine Mahaffey Day. The same year, she received the "President's Award" from The Composers, Authors and Artists of America for 50 years of service. She loved life and could finish a painting in under 15 minutes painting on anything that wasn't nailed down - cardboard, wrapping paper, backs of Christmas Cards and of course her serious work or canvas. Her art has been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, the Fort Worth Art Center, and the Heritage Hall in Fort Worth among many others. As a Texas regionalist painter she is considered to be one of the early "Texas Impressionists" and one of very few female artists working in Texas at the time (1930's-40's). Highly regarded; Mahaffey's work can be found in museums and galleries throughout Texas and The United States. Condition reportin seemingly good condition unexamined outside of the frame
