Artist: Neiman, LeRoy (American, born 1921)
Title: Frank at Rao's Date: 2005 Medium: serigraph printed in colors Dimensions: 25 5/8 x 38 inches Edition: 399/400 Description: Rao's Restaurant, a popular landmark in New York City, and famous for being difficult to get a table, opened in 1896 and has been owned and managed by several generations of the Rao family for over 100 years. LeRoy Neiman was taken for his first late hour visit to Rao's by his pal Rocky Graziano in the late 1960's. Vincent Rao wearing his Stetson hat held forth from the kitchen as his wife, Anna, always made the clientele feel at home. For over thirty years a Neiman, on-the-spot sketch of Vincent hung next to the bar. In Frank at Rao's, Neiman adds a quintessential New York landmark to his famous restaurant and bar collection, which includes P.J. Clarke's, The Irish-American Bar, F.X. McRory's Whiskey Bar, Pump Room Bar, The Polo Lounge, Toots Shors Bar, and the Bar at 21. We have seen LeRoy depict Sinatra performing onstage with Sammy and Liza, and recording in the studio. In Frank at Rao's, LeRoy has captured America's most beloved singers in one of New York's most colorful restaurants.
