Title: Certificate for $1000 from the Montana Territory

Description: Engraved (including illustrations and decorative border) certificate with gilt stamping, and embossed stamped seal of the Montana Territory. 10¼x15¾, with fold-out extension with (at one point) 14 very small $50.00 checks to be cut out, and from which six were cut out.Signed on the bottom by Montana Territory Governor Benjamin Franklin Potts (signed B.F. Potts). Note No. 10, entitling Kountze Bros. to $1000, "Issued under the provisions of an Act of the Seventh session of the Montana Legislature entitled an Act to provide for the funding of the outstanding Indebtedness of Montana Territory etc." It was redeemed according to the red ink notation written vertically across it on recto and verso. Part of an issue limited to $91,250.
