Title: Oil prospector's workbook for the Blackfeet Indian Reservation – containing topographical maps, blueprint maps, and blue line maps of townships
Author: ** Description: Approximately 242 pp. With approximately 80 topographical maps, 80 blueprint maps, and 80 hand-colored blue line maps. 16¾x13¾, bound with metal screws through red leather-backed cloth-covered 1" thick boards. A map by Eugene Stebinger "showing anticlines on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Montana" has been pasted to the inside front cover. The search for oil in the Blackfeet Indian Reservation was likely spurred by the discovery of oil just west of the reservation around 1903 and directly north of the reservation in southern Alberta, Canada in the first decade of the 20th century. This workbook is from the very early stages of oil exploration in northern Montana, a process that continues today with the 2009 contract between the Blackfeet Indians and an oil and gas exploration company. The book is a compilation of topographical maps under the direction of Topographer in charge, A.F. Dunnington, blueprint maps, and land ownership of ranges within the Blackfeet Indian reservation, including the area surrounding the Great Northwest Railroad. For each range within each township, there are 3 maps: a topographical map, a blueprint map, and a blue line map, which is hand-colored and labeled with name of the family who owned the range or lived there. The names include those such as Joseph Arrowtopknot, Sarah Runningcrane, Killsatnight Madplume, Mary Manytailfeathers, and Antelopewoman Chiefcoward. Additionally, there are a few unfinished sketches of the blue line maps preceding them. A color-code corresponds to the hand coloring on the blue-line maps and the key is written on the verso of the second leaf. The colors correspond to three kinds of ownership of land: Tribal land, Patented land, and Submarginal land. The first leaf is an overall blueprint map of the entire Blackfeet Indian Reservation of Teton County, Montana, showing township arrangement and drainage. On the verso of this map is the first range's topographical map, with a red crayon written notation, "2657 oil rights." Heading: (Montana)Place Published: Washington, D.C.
