It had been an ordinary village until the 1960s, when Mao published his Supreme Directive, "Learn from Dazhai in agriculture". Afterwards, newspaper and magazine stories, books and films were produced nationwide to promote how hard and diligently the villagers of Dazhai managed the fields to produce bountiful crops, and engineered the construction of reservoirs and aqueducts across deep valleys for irrigation..
