SHARPS MODEL 1853 SLANT BREACH SHARPS CARBINE "JOH

Serial No.: 13669 Marked Sharps Patent 1848 on the tang. Sharps Patent 1852 on the lock plate, barrel also has matching serial number. History as shown in the official records of the 1st CA.; This gun was issued to Silas Ruggles who was in the first CA Calvary. He enlisted Sept. 2, 1861 in Sacramento, CA. Mustered into Company C. Mustered out Sept. 7, 1864 in Los Cruces, Mexico. During the Civil War, Co. C with Ruggles saw action in TX against Baylor's TX Rangers as part of Carleton's Expeditions to NM and TX. In 1862 they also action against Indians near Fort Davis, TX and against Mescalero Indians in NM. In 1863, Co. C participated in the capture of Mangus Colorado, one of the Apache war chiefs. This particular gun is within the serial number range of guns used by Brown in the raid at Harper's Ferry it is not included in the list of known guns but possibly was one of the ones used. Condition: Retains original saddle ring, brass patch plate. Original stock shows wear comensurate with age and civil war usage, short split at bottom of butt. All lettering is crisp and sharp. Original finish 50%, showing mottled age wear and use. Original bore is fine with very minor wear. Adjustable rear sight is missing the elevation slide as is fairly common with Cavalry weapons, front sight possibly replaced. Fresh and untouched fro a 50 year collection.
Size: 37.5" long Barrel length is 21.5" PLEASE NOTE: There is a small period repair to stock just below the hammer, a 1" long piece was reattached with a brass pin or nail.
