4to, 3/4 green morocco, gilt-embossed boards, gilt title to spine, 5 raised bands, marbled endpapers, additional engraved title, frontispiece, engraved armorial title page vignette. First edition. Extra illustrated edition with 22 plates (three hand-colored aquatints including additional pictorial title and frontispiece), folding lithographed map (partly hand-colored), with many of the plates in duplicates (apparently proofs without text) and numerous in-text engravings. Most copies come with 13 plates. Some foxing; rubbing to boards and bands; two news photos and one article lightly tipped in f.f.e.p.; otherwise fine.
