Sign In to see what this sold for

Du Pont de Nemours, Pierre Samuel (1739-1817), Autograph letter signed, Paris, May 1, 1789, one page, to Mr. de L'Aumont, commenting that he didn't have a report on the State of Commerce due to his influence being stripped by the Archbishop of Paris, 4to, (some minor soiling and toning to right margin).

Note: Besides being the patriarch to one of the most powerful corporate dynasties in American history, Du Pont is lauded for his early recognition of low tariffs and free trade. By the early 1760s Pierre Samuel's writings on the national economy had drawn the attention of intellectuals like Voltaire and Turgot. His book, Physiocracy, deeply influenced Adam Smith. He maintained a lively friendship with Thomas Jefferson and through his work during the Napoleonic era formulated the idea that would later become the Louisiana Purchase.
