Honolulu: Mea paipalapala a na misionari [Mission Press for American Tract Society], 1842. 12mo (149 x 87mm). 8 wood-engraved plates (5 by Alexander Anderson and 3 by Abraham John Mason). Contemporary sheep, covers with border in blind made up from roll tools, the flat spine divided into five compartments by roll tools in blind. Condition: upper cover detached, spine chipped, extremities slightly rubbed, some old light staining. Provenance: Rev. E.S. Hopkins (presentation inscription from the Rev. Elias Bond, Kohala, Sandwich Islands, dated 12 June 1844). a fine association copy of the first edition in hawaiian of the pilgrim's progress, and one of the first works of literature to be published in the Hawaiian language. The Rev. Bond translated at least seven books for the Mission Press between 1859 and 1868. Cf. S. Hamilton. American Book Illustrators (1968) 330; cf. Judd Hawaiian Language Imprints 237.
