RAILROADS -Alaska Railroad Commision. Extensive Album of 348 photographs depicting the development of the Alaska Railroad Alaska: c. 1917. Oblong folio, black morocco with gilt lettering (285 x 380 mm). Album contains 348 sepia-toned gelatin silver prints mounted at corners, in three different sizes (smallest: 60 x 80 mm; largest 107 x 153 mm). Many titled in negative. Condition: silver mirroring, some foxing and soling, some photographs with small puntures, creases; binding worn with small losses. Provenance: Major Jay J. Morrow (name stamped in gilt to upper cover); by descent in the family. An interesting album of early Alaska Railroad Photographs once belonging to Railroad Commisioner Jay Johnson Morrow. Morrow had served as Chief Engineer to the First American Army during World War I and became the District Engineer at Portland, Oregon and Alaska shortly thereafter. Upon completion of the Alaskan railroad he was governor of the Panama Canal zone from 1921-1924. Morrow appears in several photographs as do other members of his engineering team. Photographs depict the building of the Railroad and the towns of Seward, Knik, Sourdough, Juneau, Fairbanks,Cordova and others. Other images show rivers, ships, volcanoes, and other various geographical locations. Of particular notice are photographs of Indian Camps, locomotives roaring through the Alaskan landscapes and the engineers at work.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
