These autographs were collected in the spring of 1964 when NASA brought 14 astronauts and other administrators to Arizona to tour the Grand Canyon in order to simulate the surface of the moon. Rarely are the signatures of these important men seen together. Several of these astronauts accomplished great feats in space, including Armstrong and Aldrin, the first two men to walk on the moon, Scott Carpenter, an original Mercury 7 member, and Alan Shepard, the first American in space. Sadly, several of these astronauts died in space disasters or in training missions, many before the 1969 moonwalk, such as Clifton Williams, Elliot See, Roger Chafee, Ted Freeman, and Charlie Bassett. An assembly such as this from the height of the space program is rare, and the scarcity of some of these signatures is remarkable.
