EINSTEIN, Albert (1879 - 1955). Typed letter signed regarding resistance and the "calamitous peril" facing Jews in 1939. Princeton: 10 June 1939. Typed letter written in English, signed "A. Einstein" in ink, addressed to "My dear Mr. Marcus" of New York City. One sheet of Einstein's embossed stationery (280 x 210 mm). Condition: usual folds with one short split along right margin, light creases. "may we stand this test as well as did our fathers before us" - a poignant einstein letter on jewish resistance on the eve of war. Just a few weeks after his dedication speech at the Palestine Pavilion at the New York World's Fair, Einstein congratulates New York City Shoe-store owner Joseph M. Marcus for the "splendid work" he had done on behalf of refugees during Dedication Week. Einstein's tone quickly becomes very serious though, turning to resistance: "The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years ... is being put to an especially severe test. We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause." Einstein closes with thanks to Marcus for his efforts towards "rescuing our persecuted fellow-Jews from their calamitous peril and leading them towards a better future."ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
