HUNTER, Dard The Literature of Papermaking 1390-1800 Chillicothe: Mountain House, 1925. Folio (460 x 330 mm). 22 illustrations and 24 reproductions of old title pages. Original half cloth and paper portfolio with ribbon ties, later clamshell box with paper spine label, unbound as issued, uncut. Condition: outer portfolio worn with cloth cracked along hinges and several sections of loss to spine, cloth ties broken, box bumped at bottom of spine. Provenence: Utica Public Library (bookplate). first edition, limited to 190 numbered and signed copies. The second of Hunter's hand-made books devoted to the history and art of papermaking; he hand-printed the book on hand-made paper using type that he had designed and cast. Although the limitation in the book reads 190 copies, his autobiography (p.71) states that only 180 copies were produced. Halfway through the production, Hunter experienced a hemorrhage in his left eye from an earlier accident which reduced his sight to less than half normal vision.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
