Pierre Choumoff (Russian/French, 1872-1936) and Charles Berthelomier

(French, 19th/20th Century)
Seven Photographs of Auguste Rodin Sculptures.
Five stamped "...Choumoff...5, Faubourg St-Jacques, PARIS" on the reverse, one stamped "Ch. BERTHELOMIER/15, Rue du Delta/PARIS" on the reverse, sheet sizes to 9 3/8 x 7 1/8 in., unframed. Condition: Toning, scattered soiling/staining, mild nicks/wear to edges.

Provenance: Through the estate of the American painter, Antonio Cirino (American, 1889-1983).

N.B. Auguste Rodin believed photography was integral to the dissemination of his work. During his lifetime, photographs of Rodin's sculptures were used to supplement exhibitions of his sculptures by providing the viewer with images of works that were not on display. They were also sold commercially in albums and used to illustrate articles on Rodin's work. Rodin worked with a variety of photographers, each offering "his own vision, thus renewing and enriching the artist's view of his sculptures." Eugene Duret collaborated with Rodin from 1896 until 1903, followed by Jacques-Ernest Bulloz and several others. Pierre Choumoff was the last photographer to collaborate with Rodin, and after the Rodin's death in 1917 Choumoff became the first photographer for the Musee Rodin.
