Venice: Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari, 1561. Small 8vo (152 x 98 mm) Full blue crushed morocco gilt extra by Niedree, gilt edges. Condition: restoration to lower margin of title affecting bottom of imprint date. Provenance: John Carter Brown (armorial bookplate stamped "Duplicate Released, 1965"). Acquisition: sale, Christie's New York, 19 May 2000, lot 274, $2,820. first italian edition of the singularitez de la france antarctique. Thevet, a Franciscian friar, accompanied the Villegagnon expedition to Brazil in 1555, a voyage undertaken to found a French colony. (see notes to previous two lots).
