STAFFORDE, Robert A Geographicall and Anthologicall description of all the Empires and Kingdomes, both of Continent and Ilands in this terrestriall Globe.
London: T.C. for Simon Waterson, 1607. 4to (180 x 136 mm). [8],67,[5]pp. Modern red pigskin bound to style, covers panelled in gilt, spine gilt in six compartments, green morocco gilt label. Condition: old ink notes at end of introductory matter, title trimmed close at upper margin, F1 with closed tear affecting text, a few other small marginal edge tears, some old marginal notes, some light browning and staining mostly in margins. Provenance: early 19th-century family notes on blank margin of prelininary leaf.; sale, Sotheby's London, 12 June 2000, lot 238. Acquisition: purchased from William Reese Company (2000), $4,000. An interesting general geography including notes and sometimes curious information on Florida, Virginia, Nova Francia, Newfoundland, and mentioning Nova Albion (California). For New France the author describes canoes "little boats made of leather, which they use to fish in, & when they have done to take them up at their back, and carry them away." The account of Peru makes note of "gold, precious stones, Spieces, Suger, &strange hearbs, among which is that hearbe tobaco, which is much and widely used amongst us." A scarce work, and only the present copy has appeared at auction in the last three decades. European Americana 607/89, STC 23135
