Large Cantonese porcelain bowl decorated with famille rose, polychrome, and white glazes, China ca. nineteenth century. On the interior, cartouches with alternating narrative scenes and flowers, birds, and butterflies surround a wonderfully-detailed central panel showing ladies and their servants in a scene from domestic life. Painted bats and butterflies fly within an intricate pink-and-green background design of flowers and foliage decorated with gilding, while smaller cartouches containing bird-and-flower motifs decorate the rim; a trio of pink-and-green floral motifs decorate the exterior sides.
