John Gordon Thompson (1842-1893) Home Rule: Cartoon Of Gladstone And Salisbury. pen and ink over pencil on paper 32 by 27cm., 12.7 5 by 10.5in. During the 1860s Thompson's work appeared in, 'Punch', 'Beeton's Magazine', Boy's Own Magazine', 'Broadway', 'London Society and Sunday'. Thompson also contributed to the 'Graphic', most notably cartoons of the Franco-Prussian war. From 1870 to 1878 and again from 1890 to 1893 Thompson was Political Cartoonist on 'Fun Magazine'. Displaying the influence of Tenniel, Thompson's cartoons were original and inventive, and, in general illustrated a support for the Liberal Party.
