John Bulmer Hobson (1883-1969) The Republic. Letterpress, vol.1 no.1-23 28 by 22cm., 11 by 8.5in.
Provenance: John Bulmer Hobson's library; thence by descent to the present owner Inscribed by Hobson, "Founded and edited by Bulmer Hobson" on No.1 masthead. Hobson was a leading member of the IRB and Irish Volunteers. He swore Pádraig Pearse into the IRB in 1913 but opposed the Rising. He took little or no part in politics after 1916 and became a civil servant in the Free State Government. The Republic was the journal of The Dungannon Clubs which Hobson had founded with Davis McCullough, and which was an "Open Front" for the IRB.
